Why would a small business need a network consultant?

Every business that relies on internet connectivity to conduct business should have information technology (IT) professionals available with a working knowledge of business IT systems and network installation standards. Businesses that don’t have the budget for full time IT support should retain the services of a network consultant or advisor. With over 30 years of experience working as an IT teacher, systems administrator and IT department director, I have the experience necessary and I am available to provide IT services for businesses that need limited or part time support but do not have the budget to afford full time IT staff or IT management services.

I live in Lyndonville, VT and I am currently the Director of Information Services at Lyndon Institute. I am available to work as a consultant to assist with the planning, design, implementation and upgrades of home, small and medium business network and IT projects. As a sole proprietor, I can provide services with a personal touch at a fair price.

Although not all encompassing, below is a list of areas where I have experience.

  1. Planning, design, and implementation of structured network cabling.
  2. Installation and programming of switches and routers
  3. Developing IP addressing schemes and planning VLAN segments
  4. Supervising the implementation and installation of VOIP systems including developing dial plans, auto-attendant instructions, voicemail to email, etc.
  5. Windows Server Operations including:
    • Active Directory implementation and operation
    • Hyper-V
    • Network Policies
    • Group Policy Management
  6. Google Workspace administration services
  7. Implementing and maintaining DHCP on both servers and switches
  8. Creating, maintaining and updating DNS records on both local servers and through online services such as Network Solutions, Cloudflare, etc.
  9. Firewall installation and implementation.
